Become a Youth Coalition Member
The purpose of the Washington Parish Youth Coalition (WPYC) is to empower youth to make healthy decisions concerning tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and other drugs with the support of adults in a safe environment.
The program aims to:
(1) address norms regarding substance use by youth
(2) reduce opportunities for teen substance use
(3) create changes in youth and their peers with positive messaging
According to the 2024 Caring Communities Youth Survey (CCYS), 91% of youth in Washington Parish did NOT consume alcohol in the past 30-days. Our youth coalition encourages all youth to be part of the 91.
BE the 91!
History of the WPYC
The Washington Parish Youth Coalition (WPYC) includes students in grades 7–12 from schools across the parish who are committed to reducing youth substance use in their communities. Founded in 2014 with only six members, the coalition has grown to more than 100 active students making healthy choices and promoting prevention related to tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs. Monthly meetings are held at each high school, facilitated by trained teachers and supported by a full-time Youth Coordinator.
WPYC members participate in CADCA trainings and have been recognized at both the state and national levels for their outstanding prevention work. Since the coalition began, Washington Parish has seen significant declines in student alcohol and substance use—proof of the powerful impact of youth leadership.
